| The Dominican Republic’s bateyes are
home to approximately 30,000 people, mostly of Haitian descent,
who provide cheap labor to multi-national sugar companies. These
communities of workers and their families are among the poorest
and most isolated in the Dominican Republic, and many lack basic
necessities such as clean water, sanitation systems and access to health
care and education. Batey residents, in addition to being treated
as outsiders, are frequently denied residency and citizenship rights,
resulting in further marginalization. |
