Bateyes are shantytowns originally
founded by the Dominican government in the late 1800's so
that laborers would be available near the plantations. Today, they
remain home to sugar cane cutters and their families, and are among
the poorest communities in the Dominican Republic. Estimates place
the number of bateyes between 375 and 500. |
